Yarsagumba — literally "summer grass, winter worm" — is a wild fungus found only on the high Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya. A parasitic spore lands on a ghost moth caterpillar at high altitude. Through one Himalayan winter, mycelium colonizes the host. By spring, a slender brown stroma pushes up through the soil, the first sign that something extraordinary lies just beneath.
Tibetan doctors were writing about it by the 15th century, and it has been taken as a tonic in Tibet, Nepal and China ever since. Today, harvesters still walk the same alpine meadows their grandfathers walked — and pluck it one piece at a time.
